A Short Guide to Cleaning a Popcorn Ceiling

There are three simple methods we often recommend when people ask us for guidance on how to clean a textured ceiling. Before we get into them, it’s important to mention that popcorn ceilings installed before 1980 may contain harmful asbestos.

If you suspect that yours may be one of them, do not attempt to dust off your popcorn ceiling by yourself, as this can release harmful asbestos into the atmosphere. Instead, contact a professional to assist.

This is also recommended if you notice mold on your popcorn ceiling or require assistance addressing popcorn ceiling water damage.

With that, let’s get into our cleaning guide. These approaches use a popcorn ceiling vacuum, duster, or lint roller.

Method 1: Vacuum Your Popcorn Ceiling

This is arguably the best way to clean a popcorn ceiling. When you use a ceiling vacuum, you draw out any dirt that has accumulated in the nooks and crannies.

For this method, you will need to get onto a ladder unless you have an elongated attachment that allows you to reach the ceiling from the ground.

Use your brush attachment and simply vacuum the popcorn ceiling to get rid of any pent-up dirt and debris.

Method 2: Microfiber Duster

If you are wondering how to dust a popcorn ceiling, then this next option is for you. Using a special microfiber duster that can be extended and set at a right angle, you can gently run it across the surface to collect any dust.

This is a simple and easy method that can be used for cleaning your popcorn ceiling.

In some cases, a feather duster may be necessary to coax dirt and cobwebs off the popcorn ceiling, but if you choose this method, make sure you wear a dust mask and cover the belongings that are below.

Method 3: Use a Lint Roller

By running an extendable lint roller over a popcorn ceiling, you can also get rid of dirt. However, before you get started, be sure to do a test on a small, inconspicuous area, as a strong, sticky backing could pull out your texture.

This is a great alternative to dusting, as the dirt sticks to the roller rather than falling to the ground or on your furniture.

While these methods are effective at getting rid of dust on a ceiling, they will not remove grime and marks, in which case you will need to wipe the surface using a damp cloth and some ceiling stain remover.

The good news is that you don’t always need fancy ceiling cleaning tools for dusting ceilings. Using things you may already have in your home, you can dust and wash your ceilings and walls.
